90% of the energy consumed by a washing machine that is on a warm or hot setting is used in heating up the water temperature *before* it even goes into the machine. Solution: wash your clothes with cold water. If you by a cold water detergent, you'll have the best results. And yes, hot water does clean clothes more effectively. So don't get so dirty :)
