Name of Spot
Long Beach Flood Control
SummaryThis is an extinct spot that used to exist at the mouth of the Los Angeles River, before it was extincted by the construction of the Long Beach Harbor. Apparently this wave could handle the biggest of South swells. An interesting related sidenote: Surfrider Foundation is supporting a "Sink the Breakwater" campaign that advocates getting rid of the Long Beach breakwater, which was erected to protect the U.S. Navy base at the end of WWII. The base was closed in the mid-1990s, but the breakwater remains. For more information check out the Sink the Breakwater page on the Surfrider site.
