Originally cultured in Kumamoto Bay on the island of Kyushi in Japan, now can be found all over, including in North America from the Gulf of Mexico to Southern Canada (British Columbia). These oysters tend to have a buttery texture, and are smaller, and have a more circular shell with a black outline, or frill.
