The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been promoting the household application of chlorine to safe storage containers for several years. Chlorine is extremely inexpensive to produce locally and provides residual protection against recontamination. Its efficacy has been reported in multiple published field studies. Branded chlorine solution and tablets are being marketed in many countries by the social marketing NGO Population Services International (PSI).
