John Fabian Colson built this Queen Anne style home in 1882. Just a few years prior to the completion of this home, Colson established Colson's Department Store on west Main Street. Having worked for the late owner, Charles Anderson, for several years, Colson had worked his way up to the level of partner. Following the death of Anderson, Colson got the entire business.

The home remained in the Colson family until the 1950s. At that time the Skar family bought the home. In 1987, Bill and Judy Schultz bought it and began renovations. For many years, the former Colson home served as a bed and breakfast inn called the Charleston Guest House.
