Title
Congregational Church
DescriptionCompleted in 1847, this building stands as the oldest church in St. Charles. It has been in continuous use since its construction. A white spire sits atop the Greek Revivial building which William Beith, a local stone mason, built from local limestone. The limestone was covered by stucco in the 1920s. The Congregational Church was established in 1837 by Robert and Elizabeth Moody. During the early years of the church, meetings were held in the Moody's cabin. But due to growth in membership, it became necessary for construction of a church to begin in 1842. As a result of fluctuating membership and financial problems it took five years to build the church. (Read more on the St. Charles Public Library website.) Tags
