T.E. Ryan, a native of Ireland, came to St. Charles in 1856 as a young boy. After studying law under Judge Barry, he opened his own law office in 1876. Later, Ryan became a State's attorney.

Ryan, who built this Queen Anne style home in 1891, became involved in local matters. In addition to practicing law, he played a key role in bringing businesses to the area. Thanks to his financial aid, the Moline Malleable Corporation came to St. Charles in 1893, providing employment for local residents. Ryan also helped bring the Minnesota &amp Northwestern Railroad to the area.
