Title

Shelby School

Description

Built in 1911, this brick building, which now houses businesses, at one time served as a school named in honor of St. Charles's earliest settler. The late Victorian structure ceased being used for this purpose in 1976.

Evan Shelby came from Indiana in 1833 with his sister, Lydia, and brother-in-law, William Franklin. In 1834, he purchased land from the government. After clearing approximately six acres of this land, Shelby built a log cabin. Shelby's land is thought to be where Baker's Park is now located.

Following his death in 1837, Shelby was buried on the site where the Shelby School is located. His body was eventually moved to South Cemetery.
