Walter, who shows up at least 20 minutes late to the ongoing league Bowling Game, arrives rather excited about Theodor Herzl's philosophy about goal setting. As Walter enters the main bowling area, The Dude realizes he is accompanied by a small caged animal. The dog, strongly resembling an Ewok in The Dude's mind, evokes a concern from the recently edgy Dude. Walter works to assure him that the dog will not interfere with their pre-semifinal league bowling game.
As Walter is hurrying to suit up for the critial league match, he looks over in time to see Smokey allegedly encroach on the marked bowling release line. What ensues is a tense moment between Walter, Smoky and The Dude that really serves to establish some of the chasms in The Dude and Walter's fundamental outlook on life.
Walter ends up commanding control of the situation and convinces Smoky to abide by the commonly observed bowling rules. A foot foul results in a frame score of 0.
