At the end of a long day, The Dude finally has a chance to relax with bath. Just as the whales hit their groove, Jackie Treehorn's thugs bust in. As The Dude meets the realization that two random strangers have violated his private residence and are already in the act of damaging his personal belongs, The Dude responds with a less than half-hearted proclamtion that they were in the presence of a private residence.

The Nihilists authoritatively make their way to The Dude's bathroom and as they arrive The Dude mistakes their pet ferret for a marmot. Many leading small mammal experts attribute this as a plausible explanation for why marmots have largely decided to boycott the film. According to Animal Diversity Web marmots and ferrets differentiate by different Orders within the Mammal Class. The Dude's mistake is roughly analogous to confusing a squirrel for a rat. Questionable, but given the circumstances certainly understandable.
