Title
Jack Smedley Fatal Attack 1956
DescriptionOn the 20th July 1956 retired British naval officer Jack Smedley was swimming with a Maltese friend Tony Grech across St.Thomas Bay,Valletta, Malta when he was fatally attacked by a Great White shark. Tony heard Smedley shouting "look out". A split second later he was dragged down and disappeared underwater. Smedley surfaced moments later shouting "Help me... Help Me". His face was twisted in pain, his eyes were closed and he had a clenched fist. He then vanished and was never seen again. Tony felt something huge under his feet and believes he saw a big shark fin. A huge shark was spotted in St.Thomas Bay some days before the attack and several days after the tragedy fishermen found human remains inside a shark hooked offshore, however the dead shark was cut loose and sank to the bottom. Bluefin tuna trap nets were operating just off St.Thomas Bay shortly before the attack. Date of AttackJuly 20, 1956Type of SharkGreat whiteActivity at time of attack
