Title
Solana Beach Attack
DescriptionA man was killed in a shark attack off the coast of San Diego, California. The attack occurred shortly before 7:00AM this morning near the community of Solana Beach in the vicinity of Fletcher's Cove. The victim was swimming with a number of other people when witnesses saw him attacked by the shark and dragged underwater. A Solana Beach Fire Department spokesperson stated that the man suffered severe bite wounds on both of his legs and died roughly 45 minutes later. The victim has been identified as a 66 year old retired veterinarian. A marine expert with the Scripps Institute who has studied a number of such incidents stated that from eyewitness witness accounts of the attack, the shark that killed the man was definitely a Great White. The shark came up from the depths, grabbed the victim in it's jaws and lifted him out of the water before releasing him and swimming off. This appears to be a classic case of mistaken identity. Great Whites can easily mistake a swimmer or surfer on the surface of the water for a sea lion which is their natural prey.
