Bose 401 MSRP in 1988 was $599 but I doubt anyone paid that much. I bought a pair new in '88 for $399, and am still happily using them, nearly every day. I've received many compliments on the sound of these speakers.

These speakers have a spacious, articulate sound, but are not designed for extreme volume levels. They sound wonderful though at low and moderate volumes (15-50 watts per channel). Add a subwoofer for more bass.
