I think I understand most of what you've suggested above and am experiencing the problem. It would be great to have more flexibility as a user, but I'm sure it will create additional complications for the designers. Check out an entry that I've been experimenting with:

They have recently installed a translation platform to provide access to their content to non-English speakers. Unfortunately, the translations are so bad, they are almost funny, except that this is supposed to be a networking site for professionals. The site lost all credibility for me.
There is still nothing like a real live human translator!

It would be great if something similar were here on Listphile.
The whole process is a bit techy, but it's great once it's all set up and it worked for me when I set it up.
