The photograph is from the St. Charles Heritage Center (www.stcmuseum.org). The links above go to all the information we have at the Library. You might want to contact the Heritage Center to see what more they have. If you learn about any other digital images, please let us know! - mandy

Wow - thanks for the comment! Unfortunately I don't have more information about the house, although I added a few links to some descriptions of Ira Minard and Stevens S. Jones.
I also checked with the St. Charles Heritage Center and they passed this along, "We do not have any lore about ghosts at the site. The only house we are familiar, with respect to possible hauntings, is our own Dunham-Hunt House. This type of occurrence does not surprise me though, as with older homes people lived and died there. This was a period in St. Charles history where there were no hospitals for the sick so they were treated at home and most of the time funerals for the deceased were held in the family home."
I invite you to come to the Library where we can help you learn how to research a building - perhaps you will be the one to uncover the reasons behind the strange occurrences at your workplace!

Here's an interesting article from an old issue of Time Magazine about Baker that you can read online http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,938014,00.html

Hi, I am an employee in 504 E. Main St, the house described above. I would like to know where I could get more information on the house and the people that used to live here, reason being, we hear Yankee Doodle Dandy playing all the time, it comes from different places in our shop, sometimes it comes from the bathroom and sometimes it comes out of things that it couldn't possibly be playing from, for instance the door bell and things with no speakers. We have also had experieces where SOMETHING will pull the front door open and would not let us shut it and also the opposite where it will not open. It is like someone is twisting the door handle in the opposite direction. Many other weird but not quite scary things also happen hear a lot.

For those looking for records of Illinois Youth Center (formerly St. Charles Boys’ School) inmates, please note that neither the Library nor the Center itself has that information. In some instances we have located juvenile inmate names listed in the U.S. Census for 1920 and 1930. All records are kept by the Illinois Department of Corrections, and you can do some inmate searching on their website (see link above) but their policy is that "Juvenile records are confidential and by statute are not shared with the public."

According to an article in the Library's "Artists" file, local artist William Luckett has a small store-front studio in this space before the fire in 1933/34.

Where did you get that photograph?
I have been trying to find a site with more digital images.
I am also interested in information on the details of the history of the institution.
