"The days are long but the years fly by."

I'm pretty sure she came up with this and didn't pick it up anywhere. It was not "a saying" but just something she happened to say one day when I asked her how she was doing. view entry > | edit entry >

"If I don't have what to worry, I worry about that!"

3 up votes 1 down votes

As a Jewish grandmother, worrying was a big thing. This also features the "what to ____" construction which is the equivalent of "something to ____" or "something to ____ about". view entry > | edit entry >

"Did you have what to eat?"

1 up votes 1 down votes

Means "Did you have something to eat?". The "what to ____" construction was a recurring idiomatic device that I think is unique to Montreal. view entry > | edit entry >

    "How's by you?"

1 up votes 1 down votes

Equivalent to "How are you?". Similarly, "Eh - and by you?" could be used to asked someone's opinion of something that was recently said. view entry > | edit entry >

"Sweep the corners of a room and the middle will sweep itself."

My great-grandmother drove my grandmother crazy with this saying. view entry > | edit entry >

    The Movie Rating System

1 up votes 2 down votes

My family splits on whether it is a 3-star or 4-star system, but the 4 star version is:

    **** "I'm not sorry I went." [best]
*** "What's all the fuss about?"
    ** "I don't know. Can't say."

    Oogie

Definition: get out of the way or look out.
Maybe a derivative of ah-ooga, like an old car horn? view entry > | edit entry >

Some collected wisdom and some funny (in my case, Montreal-Jewish) colloquialisms.
