Title

Façade Sud, Chapelle Saint Sebastien

Description

This sundial is on the southern facade of the chapelle saint sebastien in Le Villard, Valouise. This facade of the church has alsoe several other drawings. The dial is from 1869 and created (and signed) by Zarbula. The dial has been restored in 1997.

The dial shows hour and half-hour lines from 8 to 5 o'clock. It also has a line of equinoxes.

The motto says "ne compte pas sur la premiere car tout depend de la derniere", do not count on your first (hour), everything depends on your last (hour)".

The dial is created in a trompe l'oeil fashion. It has a peacock on top and two flower pots (sign of abundance?). It presents a curtain with 5 knots at the top. The Stylus is set in a drawing of a face and has a moon below it. Note the masonic signs.
